Have your say! - English in 10 minutes

From: Rachel

Hello mates:

This is my turn to contribute to the section "Have you say" so I want to share with you this funny video about the History of English. I've thought the issue could be appropriate since we've talked about it in class.

I hope you enjoy it. It has subtitles in English, to see them click on the first button on the right.

  1. Great video! I love history of languages, especially history of English and this clip has given me many fun facts I did not know.
Recently, I was talking about how English grows everyday. I like the way it adapts to the times since it gets new words for referring to new realities. For example, the verb "to google" something, "instagramming food" (the one we studied) or "email me" instead of "send/write me an email". I found this absolutely fantastic!
I was taken aback when I was told there is no English Language Academy. We have RAE which, where we like it or no, controls the language and what words are included in the dictionary. Thus, English changes quickly but, as a counterpart, it has many variations.
That's why I adore this language... but sometimes I hate it too.
    Cheers!

  2. You were right, Rachel, I enjoyed a lot! There were some very funny parts, for instance, when Normands said: "Excuse my English". I also laughed at the problem of cheek kissing. I found out about the sexy new Bible. And one of the best moments, in my opinion, was when it is said that yoga is pretending to be spiritual
